stone cold classic, although pastime paradise has been reissued a couple of time on compilations every single reissue has used the rocky lp version which is not nearly as good as the original 7inch cut. as we at athens of the north like to do things right we went back to the sony tape vault and had the 7- version transferred for the first time since the o.g 45 was cut. this 45 sounds fantastic, much stronger then the o.g 45 cut so its a no brainer. on the flip we took one of our favourite track from the lp and introduced it to 7inch for the first time, mambotango is a dreamy sountracky latin disco number i used to spin on warm up duty, very new york.

son of sound aka henry maldonado has been producing influential house music dating back right back to 1991. he has released on strictly rhythm as house 2 house, maxi records as deja vu and maw records as rhythm section. son of sound has recently appeared on tirk and local talk before dropping the bomb that is jewel eye nights on jus ed s underground quality. he also has releases scheduled for later in the year on razor n tape and city fly. currently working on a collaboration ep with recloose for his own district 30 label. henry is also host of the highly regarded hit it and quit it radio show on the lot and east village radio with recloose and private panther.

the fruit bands fleeting existence was only recently revealed by the discovery of a few unsold copies of their sole 1978 single,say it, which quickly became a cult showpiece for savvy djs and collectors. athens of the north has since reached out to cypress studios of jacksonville, florida and discovered a complete album of the groups stylish, dancefloor-smashing funk and deep disco on tape, unreleased for over 30 years. vinyl is presented in a handmade cardboard tip-on sleeve as would have been used at the time as only the best will do.

the second wanda group lp on opal tapes see’s camouflage alter from the greyscale negative sludge of the earlier “piss fell out...” lp into a dramatic and more dynamic sound-world. field recording, stochastic process and tape drag combine with wanda’s wit and reflectivity on the banal and the life changing aspects of the everyday and the process of the body.

italian native, christian lisco is well known for having an extremely envious collection of vintage synthesisers and drum machines housed in his basement. it was there that four ridiculously special acid cuts that we are prone to immediately fall in love with on first reception. -your joy” which sees the collaborative efforts of singer, michael clifford, evokes the feeling of the early age of american house music. the next set of tracks were treated with a surrounding of acid basslines and heavy drums. mixed live and directly recorded to tape.

we reckon it s time for a full junktion ep on outplay! you can say wide awake is an appropriate title after a wonderful 2015 with a string of ep s on sleazy beats, razor-n-tape and rose records. this four tracker explores the sound he s been developing over the years and even touches a newer side. the ep opens with the title track wide awake and embodies the signature junktion sound with a summery balearic touch. what we are is a faster synth laden affair coupled with his usual sample action. sunny side up is what the title says it is, a sunny disco track driven by a groovy bassline and a funky rhythm guitar. the ep closes down with don t mess up for a more contemplative jazzy track with some smooth sampling and afro touches.

this polyrhythmic swirl of drum machine, tape echo and locked grooves is the product of two post-1982 jam sessions between an anonymous dj and drum machine operator duo. the dj liked the way a record happened to skip. more were made to do so. the drum machine operator had had a bit too much, but he knew that 100 divided by 3 was 33 - and he was feeling the toms that night. file under: funky experimental.

ngly makes a return to l.i.e.s. following his highly lauded “speechless tape” ep from 2014. since then we have seen argentinian producer taking his live act around the world to much acclaim. luckily he s also been in the studio recording and finally delivering this new three track ep. here we get his signature dusty low slung sound full of basslines, creeper strings and driving drum programming. these are subtle yet effective funk-ridden club tools that are sure to move the floor and a precusor to even more from the in demand producer.

if everything suddenly changed – what would that be like?
qnete’s ep is not the question and not the answer. it’s in a hiatus between hopes and fears, still maintaining an eager energy. within a short period of time all tracks were recorded straight to tape, raw and improvised. they remember the sun bath before the storm, when you feel that something is about to roll over you. they express the urge and need to sometimes just jump into the cold water to face what’s coming next. they linger in the nervous energy when you’re lost and don’t know what to expect. but they also talk about the hope of finding a safe place.

on a fishing trip two years ago, the two main guys behind africaine 808: d leyers and nomad - went to a tackle shop to buy some creepy crawlies (saltwater worms), not knowing that they were about to make a life changing discovery. in front of the shop a blind man was jammming on a little electronic organ, stomping his feet, singing, growling and basically making a scene. the boys were quite impressed with the fella, who introduced himself as blind double d . they offered to bring him home and record him. he turned the offer down, but offered instead that they could record him on the spot in front of the tackle shop - if they bought him a bottle of good bourbon. he explained that he would never set foot into a studio again in his life: he was sick of music production and the music industry in general, and that he just wanted this bottle of bourbon and to be left alone. the boys got him the bottle, and recorded blind d.d. on the spot with a tape recorder they borrowed from the tackle shop. unfortunately, the tape was stored in one of the tackle boxes over the trip, and some of the creepy crawlies crawled into the tape and stank it all up. this added some extra funk to the recording. with dirk and nomad s usual studio trickery and production skills, they created the two versions of this very very funky, creepy, stanky track. we hope you ll enjoy it as much as we do.

on the a side scm provides the perfect blend of analog synths, heavy kick drums and a badass bass line ranging from fuzzy voices to contagious latin samples. on the flip the berlin based label delivers a very rare recordings of his guest chicago’s jordan fields. these experiments were recorded directly to tape and lost till now!

soma’s italian connection, roberto clementi, makes a welcome return opening his 2016 account with the solid, “wall of people”. including a top notch remix form ilian tape label heads, marco & dario zenker. robert has slowly been building his credentials in the techno world with some fine releases and this driving number is another to add to increasing discography with soma.
the zenker brothers remix opens the ep as the munich based duo lend their deep and highly refined production talents to “wall of people”. ruptured beats play havoc with a shimmering high end and rattling percussive elements all tied in with a pulsing, modulating synth hook that keep the track feeling fairly dark. clementi’s original shows a much harder edge to his previous work with big, sub heavy beats worked around a more pumped up rhythm and tearing synth line

skam records are very proud to release an album of unheard tracks from one of our very first artists and it feels good to have him back home. jega has always provided his own slant on the genre, with warm standout melodies and his always edgy solid beats driving it all. its good to hear his machines working again after all these years. jega returns with a selection of the year before his seminal first release (ska006). a collection of unreleased tracks from 1995, recorded live to cassette tape and dat, and gathered 20 years later to form 1995. this album provides a glimpse into the fledgling electronic music scene of the 90s.

originally released via ascetic house in 2015, vereker’s grace tape owes much to the canon of vintage anti-music, exploring catharsis via a transgression of traditional compositional & technical values. working with the same thematic concerns of much of the more leftfield additions to the avian catalogue - in it’s more subdued moments, anxiety & dissafection, in it’s more high energy - pure hysteria - the recording pairs basic synthesis with warped vocals in the same manner as industrial progenitors throbbing gristle and steven stapleton (nurse with wound).

nice price deal !!! tom and his computer is the newest alias for copenhagen favourite thomas bertelsen. he started out as a teenager by looping and creating beats on his 4 track tape-recorder. since then the very talented producer and dj has been around the block. he produced two albums (with lulu rouge) and a number of songs, edits and remixes. he has also been djing alongside trentemøller every now and then since the early days and most recently tom and his computer performed live on the opening slot of trentemøller’s latest live tour and lately at sonar copenhagen 2015.

this first compilation from copenhagen label pattern abuse is an eclectic collection of some of denmark’s finest artists from all around the musical spectrum. quirky electronica, retro techno, future garage, post punk and more: at first glance the nine tracks on this relase seem an odd blend. but played together, a common thread of dark and dusty sound appears, showcasing pattern abuse as a label that is sure to deliver unexpected and high quality sounds.

the maghreban has been making dusty house music for a couple of years now and has put a few records out on his own imprint zoot and also on versatile records. some people have liked this. the maghreban found a bunch of old cassette tapes at his dads house. one said ‘alex july 84&#8242,,, on it. this tape was from alexandria, egypt in the summer of 1984. it had some interesting music recorded on it. the maghreban sampled a few of the tracks to make this one.

kris- & konflikthantering is swedish for crises and conflict management, as well as a course at university guiding you how to manage scenarios involving crises and strategies in handling conflicts. this album was put together while harald was taking this course. this album was made during semi-unconscious conditions and is an emotional transcription of experiences to the language of sequences and frequencies. the soundscape is a warm fuzzy travel from krauty basslines, vocal fragments and mantras through echoes and reverberating tunnels with shimmering arpeggios, field recordings and programed patterns in ancient japanese roland techniques. all recorded on the studer b67 master tape recorder, the heart of the kranglan broadcast studio.

a-side is for paying respect! librarian samples these classics from the library and delivers two exquisite pumping house tunes. tape003 is gets you through a dreamy ride while -bronx key- brings in the classic 909 vibes! the other side delivers originals from strip steve and straydogpalace which follow absolutely no rules. -last one and i m out continues developing the dream from -tape 003- while one bedroom apartment is just in its own galaxy of sonic experiences. words are irrelevant, music speaks for wxtfx001.

brotherhood sagats and ludovic, together with steve murphy & dj octopus, are another duo coming from the venetian school of the now berlin based analogue cops. their sound reflects the typical approach where drum machines, synthesizers and samplers are recorded directly on tape without being digitalised. handmoon ep encloses five fine raw cuts, four pressed onto vinyl and a bonus track which is available though hardmoon london bandcamp only.

chupacabras and brother y join forces to form the debut vinyl release from tutamen. brooklyn resident and elusive production talent chupacabras offers up two machine-powered cosmic cuts, expanding upon the territory explored with his contributions to the tutamen tape series and last years ep for go finger. the as-yet unknown brother y makes a first appearance with two hypnotic numbers on the b-side.

amin peck is an electronic studio project, contaminated by the new wave from u.k. like most ’80s electronic bands. amin-peck walked a fine line between disco and minimal wave throughout the course of the early 1980s, oftentimes incorporating shameless pop melodies and avant-garde leanings. amin peck were an italian band leaded by giorgio fioroni (aka george fyron, arrangements, production, vocals) with leonard parker (arrangments, keyboards) and max marne (production). incredible but true, amin peck started as hard rock guitar band in the 70s... and becoming one of the best examples of italo disco. this limited edition it contains full-length versions plus uncut audio material (a2) tracked down during tape restoration. (the first pressing coming from 1982 was pressed only on 7inch in u.k.)
